Employer framework and marketing portal

A sun-safety programme you can run, prove and improve

Assess the risk, write it into policy, control it with the hierarchy of controls, train and supervise, then review. Every tool you need to roll it out is free to download below.

Roll-out in four weeks

From assessment to a working routine

  1. Week 1

    1. Assess

Complete the UV risk assessment for each site or job group, with the SHE representative and a few workers.

  2. Week 2

    2. Decide

Adopt the policy template, pick the priority controls and name the owner, start date and review date for each.

  3. Week 3

    3. Equip

Install pump stations at the gate, change rooms, site office and vehicles. Issue hats, brims, neck flaps, sleeves and eyewear.

  4. Week 4

    4. Launch

Run the toolbox talk, put up the posters, start the supervisor daily checklist and the 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00 reapply calls.

  5. Quarterly

    5. Review

Check usage, incidents and the checklists. Re-score the assessment before each summer and update the plan.

The framework

Five pillars that make sun protection auditable

Each pillar answers a question an inspector, auditor or board will ask: what is the rule, who was trained, what do workers do, how do you know it works, and how do workers get help.

  1. Pillar A: Policy

    Law and compliance

A written Workplace Sun Protection Policy that sets employer and worker responsibilities, risk assessment method, controls and review dates, aligned with the general duties in the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (and the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 on mines).

    • Policy templates and custom policy development
    • Risk assessment methodology
    • Implementation timelines
    • Annual review cycle
  2. Pillar B: Education

    Training

Short, practical training for every level: worker awareness, supervisor certification and Train-the-Trainer, with facilitator guides, workbooks and certificates of attendance.

    • Worker awareness (45 min)
    • Supervisor certification (half-day)
    • Train-the-Trainer (2 days)
    • Digital micro-training for workers
  3. Pillar C: 5-Step behaviour

    Simple and enforceable

Five visual actions that crews remember and supervisors can check at a glance: shade, clothing, hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.

    • Posters and site signage
    • Toolbox-talk packs
    • Reapply reminders
    • Dispenser stations at the point of work
  4. Pillar D: Monitoring

    Measure and improve

Quarterly audits, employer assessment questions and a KPI set (usage, participation, incidents) that show the programme is working and where to improve.

    • Site UV risk assessments
    • Quarterly audits and scorecards
    • Usage and reorder tracking
    • Annual improvement plan
  5. Pillar E: SCAN

    Screening support

An optional skin-check pathway that gives workers educational guidance and tells them when to see a professional, with referral into clinical care. Individual results are never shared with employers.

    • Consent-first, POPIA-aligned journey
    • Educational guidance, not a diagnosis
    • Referral to clinicians
    • Aggregated participation reporting only

Hierarchy of controls

Control the hazard, not just the skin

Eliminate and substitute first, then engineer, then administer, with personal protective equipment as the last line. Sunscreen is part of PPE, not a substitute for shade.
