SUN PROTECTION™A Health Brands SA initiative

Workplace UV compliance system

Protecting People. Preventing Risk. Saving Lives.

South African outdoor workers face some of the strongest UV in the world. SUN PROTECTION™ gives employers one system for it: policy, training, behaviour, monitoring, screening support and SPF 50 broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen.

Why it is different

We do not sell sunscreen. We help you run a compliant sun protection programme.

Most suppliers compete on price per tube. Employers need something else: a defensible programme that reduces health risk and stands up to an audit. SUN PROTECTION™ brings every element together under one standard.

Compliance first

Policy, risk assessment and records aligned with your OHS duties.

Behaviour that sticks

Five visual steps that supervisors can check in seconds.

Measured outcomes

Quarterly scorecards on usage, training and participation.

Workplace Compliance Framework

Five pillars. One standard.

The product behind the product: a structured programme you can implement, audit and improve.

  1. Policy

    Law and compliance

A written Workplace Sun Protection Policy that sets employer and worker responsibilities, risk assessment method, controls and review dates, aligned with the general duties in the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (and the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 on mines).

  2. Education

    Training

Short, practical training for every level: worker awareness, supervisor certification and Train-the-Trainer, with facilitator guides, workbooks and certificates of attendance.

  3. 5-Step behaviour

    Simple and enforceable

Five visual actions that crews remember and supervisors can check at a glance: shade, clothing, hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.

  4. Monitoring

    Measure and improve

Quarterly audits, employer assessment questions and a KPI set (usage, participation, incidents) that show the programme is working and where to improve.

  5. SCAN

    Screening support

An optional skin-check pathway that gives workers educational guidance and tells them when to see a professional, with referral into clinical care. Individual results are never shared with employers.

The 5-Step system

Simple actions every worker remembers

  1. 1

    Slip into shade

Use natural or built shade for breaks and, where possible, for tasks during the hours of highest UV, usually 10:00 to 15:00. Move portable shade with the crew.

  2. 2

    Slop on protective clothing

Long sleeves and long trousers in closely woven or UPF 50+ rated fabric. Collars cover the neck. Choose light, breathable fabrics for heat.

  3. 3

    Slap on a hat

A broad-brimmed hat, or a hard-hat brim with a neck flap where hard hats are required, shades the face, ears and neck.

  4. 4

    Slop on sunscreen

Apply SPF 50 broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen generously about 15 minutes before going outside. Reapply at least every 2 hours, and after sweating heavily or towelling.

  5. 5

    Slide on sunglasses

Wrap-around sunglasses or safety eyewear with a rated UV filter (for example EN ISO 12312-1 or AS/NZS 1067) protect the eyes from direct and reflected UV.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is SUN PROTECTION™?

A workplace UV compliance system for South African employers. It combines a written policy, training, the 5-Step behaviour system, monitoring, optional SCAN screening support and SPF 50 broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen in one programme.

Is sun protection required by South African law?

There is no UV-specific regulation, but section 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 requires employers to keep the workplace safe and without risk to health, as far as reasonably practicable. Solar UV is a recognised occupational hazard, so it belongs in the risk assessment and control plan. This is general information, not legal advice.

How much does a programme cost?

Site Packs cost R2,950 (Starter), R5,450 (Standard) or R8,450 (Full Compliance) a month per 25 workers, excluding VAT, on a 12-month term with the dispenser on loan. Tubes are R109 per 150 ml excluding VAT (R125.35 incl.). The online UV risk assessment is free; an on-site assessment is R4,950 for a site of up to 50 workers.

Is SCAN a medical test?

No. SCAN is screening support: it gives workers educational guidance and tells them when to see a professional. It is never a diagnosis, and individual results are never shared with employers.

What does the sunscreen claim?

SUN PROTECTION PRO is SPF 50 broad spectrum (UVA/UVB), a cosmetic sunscreen for outdoor workers. Every pack shows the directions, warnings, full ingredient list, batch code and expiry date, and you can check a batch on the product information page.
