Sun safety for sport, events and outdoor venues

Groundsmen, coaches, marshals and spectators all stand in the sun. Groundsmen, coaches, marshals, volunteers and spectators spend hours outdoors at sports grounds, races and festivals. Event Sun Stations make protection easy for everyone.

Where the exposure comes from

  • Midday matches and races
  • Volunteers and marshals on long shifts
  • Spectators without shade
  • Groundsmen working all day in the open

Controls that work, in order

  • Shade at marshal points and in the spectator area
  • Event Sun Stations at the start, finish and water points
  • Hats and long sleeves in the volunteer kit
  • Reapply messages on the PA system
  • Fixtures scheduled away from 10:00 to 15:00 where possible

Sunscreen supports shade and clothing; it does not replace them.

Questions from this sector

Can sponsors fund sun-safety stations at events?

Yes. SUN PROTECT INITIATIVE™ supports sponsor-funded education and Sun Stations with aggregated, POPIA-safe reporting.

Is sun protection a legal duty?

Section 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 requires employers to provide a working environment that is safe and without risk to health, as far as reasonably practicable. Solar UV is a recognised occupational hazard, so it belongs in the risk assessment. This is general information, not legal advice.
